Plastazote

Plastazote is an incredibly versitile form of sheet foam that is lightweight and durable, properties that make it perfect for puppet making as well as a range of other applications. It can be patterened from a flat sheet or carved as larger blocks. It can also be vac formed, textured, painted or covered and is very scalable!

The bear head below demonstrates the technique of taking a flat paper pattern from a sculpt and then enlarging it. I learnt this technique on the Nick Barnes Puppet Making residency as part of Moving Parts Festival 2017 and then used it to create my Alebrije for Manchester Day later that year. The Alebrije has since made several outings on other parades and is still going strong!

If you would like to comission me to make a plastazote puppet or sculpture please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
